Position Summary:

The Adapted Physical Education (APE) Teacher provides individualized physical education instruction or services for students with an IEP. Adapted physical education teachers evaluate and assess motor competency, physical fitness, play, recreation, leisure, and sports skills. The APE teacher supports the development and implementation of IEPs based upon assessment findings.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Essential Functions:

  • Provide consultation to administrators, instructional staff, students, and families regarding evidence-based practices for the development of students’ motor activities, including recreation and leisure time activity.
  • Provide direct instruction in the educational setting.
  • Develop appropriate, measurable IEP goals and objectives as a member of the IEP team.
  • Plan the Physical Education program to meet student’s needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Provide ongoing evaluation of student progress towards IEP goals and objectives.
  • Maintain an appropriate record keeping system and prepare reports.
  • Consultation with physical education teachers on adaptive techniques for students with adapted physical education needs.
  • Inform parents of the student’s progress and achievements as necessary.
  • Engage in regular professional learning opportunities to stay current in evidence-based practices.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly in written and oral communication.
  • Create inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities to participate with peers in general education activities.
  • Maintain physical education equipment, inventory, and instruct students in proper use of equipment
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
